The Methods We Use In Our Business_1
Sep 9th, 2008 by Kiwi Champ
In the post Setting the Focus we looked at 5 steps to building our business:
- Finding the Purpose of our Business
- Finding the Focus of our Business
- Finding the Methods we will use in our Business
- Planning a Strategy to build our Business
- Deciding what Investment we can put into our Business.
Today we are going start looking at #3 which is METHOD:
I mention “start” because this is a topic too extensive for one post.
Once we decide on our focus, it is now time to look at the methods we will employ to get started.
We may decide to use one major method with 1-2 “minors” on the side, but the idea is to focus on one main one in the beginning and keep at it until we see some good results.
A lot of people start up their business (or any other project) with great enthusiasm and then when things don’t work out for them soon enough, they give up.
Last night I was listening to a radio conference with some of the “big guns” of internet communications, and one who has a following of well over 4,000 on many social media sites was asked if he achieved his success quickly. His reply was “how about 1998″ That’s 10 years ago!
This is something we MUST understand. The “gurus” as many of the highly successful online marketers are called, have been online working at their business for years, not months.
I remember Mark Joyner for example back in the early 1990s. He is still online and going strong today.
Ok, ok don’t get discouraged! It may not take years for you to see a profit or even to see enough profit that you can leave your JOB. It may only be a couple of months.
That HAS happened to some, BUT we need to keep the mentality that this is a business, and like all businesses when you start out it takes WORK, PERSISTENCE, DISCIPLINE and PATIENCE.
Ok – we have that straight right? ![]()
The First Method we will look at is Blogging!
There are many methods that can be used to make contact with people to offer your products.
However, now that we are in the age where Social Media marketing is the most popular online communications method, not all other methods are meeting with the same success they used to. Most successful online marketers are recommending that everyone has a blog.
You can easily get started with a blog. and immediately combine this tool with at least one of the other social media tools, namely the very popular “Twitter”.
If you are not on Twitter, go to http://www.twitter.com and sign up for an account. (Then search for kiwichamp and follow me).
Now it is time to start a blog.
We have already looked at choosing a domain name that goes with your niche (in the post The Focus of You Business).
You may have already obtained one, if so, great. If not, go to www.godaddy.com now and for just $10 you can get your own domain.
There ARE places on the internet where you can get you can get a blog for free, but that is not so recommended. The main reasons for this are:
- You don’t have control over your own website. Any time the owners of the site decide, they can block you or close your account. They may lose your data.
- It is obvious by your url that you are using a free site. This does not give a very good business presentation. (For example if you decided on using a free wordpress blog, and you chose the dog training niche, your url might be something like: “yourchosendomainname.wordpress.org”). If you host your own site, your url would be simply “yourchosendomainname.com”.
With so many people on the internet now you may find that the domain name you would like is no longer available. If that happens, think about some variations.
For example “trainingyourdog.com” is not available, but “trainingyourdogblog.com” is (at least at the time of writing this lesson, it is available).
That sounds like a mouthful though, so perhaps you could try “ofcourseicantrainmydog.com” or “trainyourdogsuccessfully.com”. Well those are some ideas to help you.
If you do not have a hosting service already, here is a VERY inexpensive service I highly recommend that will get you started for just $5 a month! Hostgator
Once your service is set up (and it takes only about 1 day before an email will arrive from hostgator giving you all your instructions), you can go to your cpanel, find the fantastico icon and install wordpress.
